I bought an event upgrade and it actually made my lobby production go down.

In some special events, the event currency provides a bonus. Thus, if a purchase is made using the event currency, you lose that bonus. If the bonus you purchased with event currency is less than the bonus you received from the event currency, you will see a decrease in lobby production.
